Linking Barcodes to Tags

Link existing product barcodes to your tagd-ai tags so scanning the barcode displays your tag content.

  2. Click Link Barcode
  3. The barcode scanner opens
  4. Point your camera at the barcode
  5. Once scanned, confirm the barcode data

    • When it was linked

In Dashboard

  2. Click Linked Barcodes
  3. Find the barcode to remove
  4. Click the trash icon
  5. Confirm removal

The barcode is now unlinked and available to associate with another tag.

Update Barcode Metadata

Add notes or additional information:

  1. Open Linked Barcodes for a tag
  2. Click on a barcode entry
  3. Add or edit metadata:
    • Description
    • Product name
    • Notes
  4. Save changes

Association Rules

One Barcode, One Tag

Each barcode can only be linked to one tag at a time:

  • Attempting to link an already-linked barcode shows an error
  • You must unlink from the current tag first
  • The error message shows which tag currently has it

Multiple Barcodes, One Tag

A single tag can have multiple barcodes linked:

  • Different product variants
  • Multiple asset labels
  • Backup barcodes

Ownership

  • Only tag owners can link barcodes
  • Users with write permission cannot link barcodes
  • Barcode associations belong to the tag, not the user

Barcode Data

What Gets Stored

When you link a barcode:

  • Barcode data - The actual barcode value
  • Format - The barcode type (UPC, EAN, etc.)
  • Metadata - Optional notes and descriptions
  • Timestamp - When the link was created

Data Validation

tagd-ai validates barcode data:

  • Checks format consistency
  • Verifies checksum digits (where applicable)
  • Normalizes data for consistent matching

Troubleshooting

Barcode Won't Scan

  1. Ensure good lighting
  2. Hold camera steady
  3. Position barcode within frame guides
  4. Try adjusting distance
  5. Clean the barcode surface

Barcode Already Linked

If you see "This barcode is already associated":

  1. Check which tag has the barcode
  2. Decide if you need to reassign
  3. Unlink from current tag first
  4. Then link to new tag

If scanning doesn't show your content:

  1. Verify the barcode is correctly linked
  2. Check the tag is not deleted
  3. Ensure the tag has appropriate permissions
  4. Try rescanning the barcode

Wrong Tag Appears

If the wrong content shows:

  1. Check barcode association in tag settings
  2. Verify you scanned the correct barcode
  3. Look for duplicate barcodes

Best Practices

Organization

  • Document which barcodes link to which tags
  • Use metadata to describe the barcode's purpose
  • Review linked barcodes periodically

Naming

  • Give tags descriptive names
  • Include product/asset identifiers
  • Makes it easy to find tags when linking

Testing

  • Always test after linking
  • Scan the barcode to verify it works
  • Check on both mobile and desktop
